| Our former NR colleague, Joe Sobran, passed away today after a long battle with a variety of ailments. He was relatively young, just 64, and while physically beaten at the end, he also departed spiritually triumphant. Surely, in short order, there will be ample reflection much of it critical on the hyper-talented, hyper-controversial writer. There will be a recounting of his history at NR, the break, the following years, and Joes soured relationship with WFB (happily, they rekindled their friendship before Bill passed away). Good, lets discuss all that, and more. But later. Right now, let us,... |

| Among the bordellos of Victorian Paris, Le Chabanais was the most exquisite, and the most lavish. Over the years this maison de tolerance the word brothel was considered too tawdry saw visitors as illustrious as Humphrey Bogart, Mae West and Cary Grant. But in the 1880s, one of its principal clients was the future King Edward VII, then known to everyone as Bertie, the playboy Prince of Wales. Each of the establishments 30 rooms had its own theme, such as Moorish, Louis XIV and ancient Roman but Berties favourite was the Hindu room. |

The royal princes plodded slowly and sadly behind the coffin of their father, George V, as it was hauled through the streets of London to lie in state in Westminster Hall. In the silent crowd, Bloomsbury artist Vanessa Bell looked on the gun carriage draped with the royal standard and surmounted by the Imperial Crown and thought it 'unexpectedly lovely'. But then she caught sight of the new King, Edward VIII. What struck her was not just that he looked utterly miserable and very small, but that he was 'disreputable, patchy and debauched'. She was not impressed.

| MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australian police were embarrassed Thursday after having to discipline an officer assigned to guard Prince Edward for taking unauthorized photographs of the British visitor's hotel suite. Police said an officer assigned to a security detail for dignitaries at the Commonwealth Games had been seen during a routine security sweep taking photographs of the suite the prince will occupy until Monday. The photographs were confiscated and destroyed. "The member involved was stood down from Games duties and returned to normal duties," a police spokesman said. Victoria state police commissioner Christine Nixon said another snap-happy officer had also been... |

The betrayal committed in the Kremlin should be judged in the Kremlin, too, he... |

The original burial chamber of the Anglo-Saxon king, who died in 1066, months before the invasion of William the Conqueror, was revealed by archaeologists using the latest radar technology. The existence of a number of royal tombs dating back to the 13th and 14th century was also discovered beneath the abbey, the venue for nearly all coronations since 1066.... |

Class has been charged with three counts of murder and aggravated battery stemming from an incident on August 7, 2004. Despite allegations that Class has previously abused... |

| It t'was the night before the election in the land of Iraq, but all through the eastern seaboard Democratic senator Edward Kennedy could be heard roaring, "President Bush your Iraq policies are a catastrophic failure." Over a scotch on the rocks, Kennedy demanded that the American troops immediately begin to withdraw. Kennedy then turned his head like a jerk, belched and declared, "We have no choice, but to make the best we can of the disaster weve created in Iraq." Thusly certain Democrats began to distance themselves from the swollen red-faced man when all of a sudden he fell from... |

| If the Oklahoma City bombers refused to participate in a U.S. election, would the final results be considered illegitimate? What if the Nation of Islam, the Black Panthers, the Communist Party USA, or the Southern Indiana Regional Militia refused to vote in American elections? Would it matter and, really, who gives a damn? The Left-Wing, e.g. the New York Times, has been trying to hold the Iraqi elections to this type of ridiculous standard regarding Sunni participation. Granted: Sunnis make up 32-37% of Iraqs population. While their representation is important, the majority of terrorist attacks aimed at destabilizing Iraq have... |

| Bill Clinton has warned Senator John Kerry, the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee, to counter Republican efforts to turn this year's election into a debate on gay marriage and other "cultural issues" such as gun control and abortion. In an interview with the Financial Times, the former US president urged Senator Kerry to fight a values-based campaign focused on health, education and crime. If he stayed on that ground, Mr Kerry could win by "quite a nice margin". < clip > |

| In Desperate Move, Kerry Adopts Puppy Ann Coulter (archive) July 8, 2004 I guess with John Kerry's choice of John Edwards as his running mate, he really does want to stand up for all Americans, from those worth only $60 million to those worth in excess of $800 million. In one of the many stratagems Democrats have developed to avoid telling people what they believe, all Edwards wants to talk about is his cracker-barrel humble origins story. We're supposed to swoon over his "life story," as the flacks say, which apparently consists of the amazing fact that ... his father... |

| Political malpractice Thomas Sowell (archive) July 9, 2004 Now that Senator John Kerry has named Senator John Edwards as his vice-presidential running mate, we need to examine the reality behind the images that both men have projected. Senator Kerry has been busy posing for the media shooting guns, playing hockey, declaring himself as having "conservative" values, and even saying that life begins at conception. The point of all this is to counter any attempt to depict him as a limousine liberal, out of touch with the values of mainstream Americans. It is an insult to our intelligence to act as... |

| RE: Dear Uncle Ted When Sen. Ted Kennedy was merely just another Democrat bloviating on Capitol Hill on behalf of liberal causes, it was perhaps excusable to ignore his deplorable past. But now that he's become Sen. John Kerry's leading campaign attack dog, positioning himself as Washington's leading arbiter of truth and integrity, the days for such indulgence are now over. It's time for the GOP to stand up and remind America why Sen. Kerry's chief spokesman had to abandon his own presidential bid in 1980 - time to say the words Mary Jo Kopechne out loud. As is often... |

Man Behind Bush AWOL Charge Is John Edwards Supporter
Thursday 24th of May 2012 01:53:19 PM

| The man who is almost single-handedly behind the story that Bush was AWOL is William Turnipseed of Alabama. Here is an excerpt from one story recently posted here at FR: "The media is now re-examining the story, though, and the Bush-haters are quite happy about it. As this story in today's Washington Post indicates, there is plenty of evidence Bush was not AWOL from his Guard duties. Indeed, one of the foundational pieces of the Bush-haters' lie is the failure of a colonel in Alabama to recall Bush ever being on post. Reached in Montgomery yesterday, Turnipseed stood by his... |
